What is CLI termination?
CLI termination in wholesale VoIP means terminating a call while preserving and presenting the caller’s actual or authorized Caller Line Identification (CLI) to the person receiving the call.
CLI = Calling Line Identification, commonly called Caller ID.
Simple example
Imagine a customer in the USA has the number:
+1 212 555 1234
They make a call to a customer in India through your wholesale network:
Call Center → SIP Provider → PW Carrier → India Carrier → End User
With CLI termination, the Indian recipient may see:
+1 212 555 1234
instead of seeing:
Unknown
Private Number
Random number
Unavailable
CLI vs. Non-CLI termination
| CLI Termination | Non-CLI Termination | |
|---|---|---|
| Caller ID | Preserved/presented | May be hidden or replaced |
| Recipient sees | Calling number | Unknown/alternate number |
| Typical use | Legitimate business calls | Routes where CLI isn’t supported/preserved |
| Customer value | Higher | Usually lower |
| Cost | Often higher | Often cheaper |
What does “CLI route” mean?
When a carrier says:
“We have CLI route to Australia.”
They generally mean they can terminate calls to Australia while supporting the required caller-ID presentation, subject to the destination carrier’s rules and local regulations.
For example:
Original CLI: +1 305 555 6789
↓
Wholesale SIP network
↓
Destination carrier
↓
Recipient sees: +1 305 555 6789
Why CLI is important for call centers
For legitimate call centers and businesses, CLI can be important because customers need to recognize who is calling and may need to return the call.
It can also affect:
- Call answer rates (ASR)
- Customer trust
- Brand recognition
- Call-back capability
- Spam-labeling risk
- Regulatory compliance
CLI termination vs. CLI spoofing
These should not be confused.
Legitimate CLI termination means the provider transmits a caller ID that the customer is authorized to use and that complies with the destination’s requirements.
CLI spoofing involves presenting a number that the caller isn’t authorized to use or manipulating caller ID to mislead the recipient. That’s a very different and potentially unlawful practice.
In your wholesale business
If you’re offering “CLI termination”, you could describe the service as:
Wholesale CLI Termination — reliable international voice termination with authorized caller-ID presentation, competitive rates, scalable CPS, stable routing, and carrier-level technical support.
And when a prospective carrier asks “Do you have CLI routes?”, they are usually asking whether you can deliver their legitimate traffic while preserving the required caller ID on the destination network, not simply whether you can send a SIP call.
