Deutsche Telekom Moves Deeper Into Poland’s Fixed Broadband Market With €1 Billion Fiberhost and Inea Deal
August 20, 2026
Deutsche Telekom is strengthening its position in Poland’s fixed broadband market with an agreement to acquire Fiberhost and Inea from Macquarie Asset Management and minority shareholders in a transaction valued at approximately €1 billion.
The deal represents another major step in the transformation of T-Mobile Polska from a primarily mobile-focused operator into a fully converged telecommunications provider combining mobile, fixed broadband and digital infrastructure.
1.4 Million Homes Within Reach
The acquisition would give T-Mobile Polska access to Fiberhost’s open-access fiber network, which currently passes more than 1.4 million homes across Poland.
It would also bring more than 300,000 Inea customers into T-Mobile Polska’s customer base.
The combination creates a significantly larger fixed-network footprint for T-Mobile Polska while complementing its existing 5G network, nationwide backbone, data centers and other fiber infrastructure.
From Wholesale Access to Infrastructure Ownership
One of the more interesting aspects of the transaction is the strategic shift it represents.
T-Mobile Polska has historically expanded its fixed broadband offering partly through wholesale access agreements. The company signed its first wholesale access agreement in 2018 and subsequently expanded its fixed broadband coverage through partnerships.
By acquiring Fiberhost, T-Mobile Polska would gain direct ownership of a substantial FTTH infrastructure platform rather than relying solely on wholesale access to third-party networks.
That gives the operator greater control over its fixed-network strategy and the ability to combine mobile and fixed connectivity into a broader converged offering.
Fiberhost to Maintain Open Access
Despite becoming part of Deutsche Telekom’s Polish operations, Fiberhost is expected to continue providing open and non-discriminatory access to its fiber infrastructure for existing and potential internet service providers.
This is particularly relevant for Poland’s broader wholesale connectivity market, where open-access infrastructure allows multiple service providers to use the same underlying fiber network.
Why This Deal Matters for the Telecom Industry
The transaction illustrates a broader trend across the telecommunications industry: network infrastructure is becoming strategically valuable again.
For years, operators increasingly relied on wholesale arrangements, infrastructure-sharing models and third-party networks to expand coverage without owning every part of the access network.
Now, major operators are increasingly looking at infrastructure ownership as a way to strengthen their competitive position.
The Deutsche Telekom–Fiberhost–Inea transaction brings together three important components:
Mobile network + Fiber infrastructure + Customer base
That combination can create opportunities for bundled mobile and fixed broadband products while giving the operator greater control over network investment and service development.
Another Sign of Telecom Consolidation
The transaction also highlights the continuing consolidation of the European telecom infrastructure market.
Rather than competing only through retail pricing or network coverage, large telecom groups are increasingly looking to control strategic infrastructure assets.
For smaller operators and wholesale providers, this trend raises an important question:
Will telecom competition increasingly depend on who owns the underlying infrastructure?
At the same time, Fiberhost’s continued open-access model suggests that infrastructure ownership and wholesale access do not necessarily have to be mutually exclusive.
A network owner can potentially compete in the retail market while continuing to generate wholesale value from its infrastructure.
What Comes Next?
The acquisition remains subject to customary regulatory and competition approvals in Poland, with financial closing expected toward the end of 2026.
If completed, the transaction will give T-Mobile Polska a much stronger position across both mobile and fixed connectivity and accelerate its move toward a converged telecom model.
For the wider carrier industry, the deal is another reminder that the telecom business is evolving beyond traditional voice and mobile services.
Fiber, 5G, wholesale access, data centers and converged connectivity are increasingly becoming parts of the same strategic infrastructure ecosystem.
TCF Industry Take
The Deutsche Telekom acquisition of Fiberhost and Inea is more than a €1 billion telecom transaction.
It reflects a broader shift in the industry:
From buying network access to owning strategic infrastructure.
As telecom markets become more competitive and traditional service margins face pressure, infrastructure ownership may become an increasingly important source of long-term competitive advantage.
What do you think?
Will European telecom operators increasingly move toward owning their own fiber infrastructure, or will open-access wholesale models remain the more efficient approach?
