Lynk and Omnispace Complete Merger, Launch Elveo Mobile to Expand Direct-to-Device Connectivity
August 17, 2026 | TelecomCarrierForum News
— The direct-to-device (D2D) satellite communications market has gained a new major player following the completion of the merger between Lynk Global and Omnispace.
The two companies have combined their operations under a new name, Elveo Mobile, creating a company focused on extending mobile connectivity from satellites directly to smartphones, IoT devices, machines and other connected equipment.
The merger officially closed on August 14, 2026, with Elveo Mobile now positioning itself as a global D2D connectivity provider working with mobile network operators, enterprises and other partners.
A Combination of Satellite Technology and Spectrum
The new company brings together capabilities that previously sat across Lynk and Omnispace.
Lynk has developed satellite-to-mobile technology designed to communicate with standard mobile devices without requiring users to carry dedicated satellite terminals. Omnispace contributes its experience and spectrum assets, including globally coordinated spectrum resources intended to support satellite-based mobile services.
Elveo says the combined business brings approximately two decades of experience in D2D communications, along with multi-band spectrum rights, patented satellite technology and relationships with mobile network operators around the world.
This combination could give Elveo a broader platform for developing satellite connectivity that complements existing terrestrial mobile networks rather than attempting to replace them.
What Is Elveo Mobile Building?
Elveo’s objective is to provide connectivity directly from space to devices that people and businesses already use.
The company’s planned services extend beyond smartphones. Its target market includes:
- Mobile phones
- IoT devices
- Automotive connectivity
- Industrial equipment
- Enterprise applications
- Government and critical communications
- Messaging and data services
The company says its network is designed to eventually support the billions of mobile phones and connected devices already in use worldwide.
Initial applications are expected to focus on lower-bandwidth services such as messaging and other essential connectivity use cases, with more data-intensive services planned as the network develops.
Why the Merger Matters to Telecom Operators
For mobile network operators, D2D satellite connectivity is becoming an increasingly important part of the broader non-terrestrial network (NTN) strategy.
Traditional cellular networks cannot economically provide coverage everywhere. Remote regions, oceans, disaster zones, transportation corridors and other difficult environments can remain outside normal terrestrial coverage.
A D2D satellite layer can potentially extend an operator’s reach without requiring a completely separate satellite handset ecosystem.
For MNOs, this creates opportunities to offer:
Extended coverage: Keep customers connected in locations outside conventional cellular footprints.
Emergency communications: Provide an additional connectivity layer when terrestrial infrastructure is unavailable or damaged.
IoT expansion: Connect machines and sensors operating outside normal cellular coverage.
Global mobility: Support connected assets across large geographic areas.
Network resilience: Add another communications path alongside terrestrial infrastructure.
Elveo is therefore entering a market where satellite and cellular networks are increasingly converging.
SES Strengthens Its Relationship With Elveo
The development also has significance because of SES’s strategic involvement.
SES announced an expanded strategic investment and collaboration with Elveo Mobile following completion of the merger. The companies plan to work together on spectrum initiatives, infrastructure, engineering, operations, regulatory activities and commercial deployment.
SES’s involvement could give Elveo access to additional satellite and ground infrastructure while helping the company accelerate its global D2D strategy.
320-Satellite Ambition
Elveo is also targeting a large satellite constellation for persistent global coverage.
The company has outlined plans for a constellation of approximately 320 LEO satellites, with deployment expected to begin in the latter part of 2027. Commercial services are targeted for 2028 as the constellation develops.
That timeline means the merger is not simply a corporate rebranding exercise. The bigger objective is to build an infrastructure platform capable of supporting large-scale D2D connectivity.
What This Could Mean for the Telecom Industry
The Elveo Mobile launch comes at a time when the boundaries between traditional telecom networks and satellite networks are becoming less distinct.
MNOs are increasingly looking at satellite connectivity as an extension of their networks, while satellite companies are seeking partnerships with terrestrial operators rather than operating completely independently.
The emergence of Elveo adds another competitor to this rapidly developing D2D ecosystem.
For carriers and telecom service providers, the important question will be how these satellite networks eventually integrate with existing mobile infrastructure, roaming arrangements, spectrum frameworks, core networks and commercial models.
If successful, D2D could evolve from being primarily an emergency or coverage-gap solution into a standard component of global mobile connectivity.
TelecomCarrierForum View
The Lynk–Omnispace combination is worth watching because it brings together satellite technology, spectrum, mobile-network partnerships and a direct-to-device strategy under one company.
The next stage will be more important than the merger itself: deployment, operator partnerships, regulatory approvals, device compatibility, service economics and the ability to deliver reliable connectivity at global scale.
For the telecom industry, Elveo Mobile represents another step toward a future where terrestrial cellular and satellite networks operate as complementary layers of one connected communications ecosystem.
TelecomCarrierForum will continue tracking developments in D2D, NTN, satellite communications, MNO partnerships and next-generation mobile connectivity.
